Step Up For Reuse This World Refill Day!

The annual global awareness day for refill and reuse is BACK on 16th June! Here’s everything you need to know.

World Refill Day is our annual global day of action designed to accelerate the transition away from single-use plastic and towards refill and reuse. Together with our community and partners, we’ve built an unstoppable global movement of everyday activists, NGOs and sustainable businesses on a mission to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.

What we’re calling for

Our research shows that people want to reduce single-use packaging, but they can’t find reusable alternatives where they shop. That’s why, this year we’re launched our Reuse Manifesto and are calling on governments to legislate mandatory standards for reuse to support industry to scale-up and meet this growing demand. We need legal and time-bound targets to increase the amount of reusable packaging on the market – 30% by 2030 – and a robust, legally binding Global Plastics Treaty.

What’s happening

We’re inviting campaigners, organisations, businesses and individuals around the world to #StepUpForReuse with us and amplify our call for international legislative change. Our citizen engagement campaign invites individuals and communities to add their voices to our call for action by contacting their local candidates ahead of the election asking them to support refill and reuse targets. Contact yours here.

Our open letter to party leaders has already been signed by over 40 concerned businesses, organisations, NGOs and ambassadors. Read it here. This open letter forms our ‘message in a bottle’ to government and is supported by ambassadors and partners around the world, amplifying our call for reuse targets internationally and a global plastics treaty on social media.

Walking the Walk

This week, the City to Sea team were joined by partners and friends in Central London to walk along the River Thames to hand-deliver our open letter to the major parties’ HQ. Our ‘message in a bottle’ asks them to commit to our Reuse Manifesto, calling for 30% of products in reusable packaging by 2030.

We walked from Vauxhall over the bridge to the Liberal Democrats HQ then onto the Conservatives HQ where we left just as PM Rishi Sunak arrived after delivering his own manifesto! Then it was past the Houses of Parliament and back over river before ending our walk at Labour HQ.

Thanks to our partners and friends Ocean Bottle, Reposit, Fill, Abel & Cole and Dr. Bronner’s for joining us, it was lovely to walk with you. Thanks too to official World Refill Day partners Ecover and Culligan UK for helping us to keep powering the Refill movement!
